The four brand new instruments are the Korg MS-20 from 1978, the Ensoniq SQ-80 crosswave synth from 1987, and two 21st century devices, Augmented Strings and Augmented Voices – which do use samples! Strings was introduced in April 2022 and Voices in May. V Collection 9 (VC 9) includes Analog Lab V and adds four new instruments, as well as providing full updates of a few other instruments, really significant updates (and you can keep the previous versions!). This enables varying parameters while the instruments are playing resulting in the same smooth variation of the resulting sounds as with the original gear. I used a mainframe computer to model things like a single amplifier with a few dozen components, and it took ten minutes for it to process and print out a list of gain and phase responses – these V Collection models process signals in real-time and model circuitry dozens to hundreds of times more complex than I modelled on that IBM mainframe.
Having actually used circuit modelling myself, many years ago, I am extremely impressed with what Arturia have accomplished. These do not use samples of sounds from those instruments, but emulate the circuitry of the originals to mimic their sound generating properties (except the acoustic pianos which use “physical” modelling to create their sounds, rather than circuit modelling). The Arturia V Collection is a tribute to the classic synthesizers, samplers and keyboards of the past 60 years or so, including the Hammond B3 (introduced in 1955), several pianos, and Moog, Yamaha, Roland, Korg and other models from the early years of electronic instruments. See V Collection 8 review below for more details on other instruments. And this time they have added a couple “non-vintage” sound modules that don’t fit the “V” mindset, but are welcome nonetheless. Once again Arturia have updated their bundle of “vintage” keyboards, which includes analogue and digital synths, samplers, acoustic and electric pianos, and organs, with an update to the Analog Lab that makes it aware of the new instruments.
